You can see Clifton Suspension Bridge from a fair few of our Bristol properties, but it’s worth actually walking across it rather than just admiring it from a distance. Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s bridge spans the dramatic Avon Gorge, and the walk across (and the view down to the river far below) is one of those experiences that photos genuinely don’t do justice.
It’s free, it’s a short taxi or bus ride from most of our Bristol homes, and it works for pretty much every kind of guest — a quick breather for contractors between shifts, a proper morning out for families, or a scenic detour for corporate visitors who want to see something other than a conference room.
The visitor centre on the Leigh Woods side has good background on how Brunel actually built the thing, which makes the walk more interesting if you’ve got kids asking questions. Combine it with a wander into Clifton Village itself afterwards — it’s full of independent shops and cafés that make for a relaxed second half to the morning. Go on a clear day if you can; the views over the gorge and the harbour beyond are the whole point.
