When the Welsh weather does what Welsh weather does, this is the one we tell families and solo guests alike to head for. National Museum Cardiff is free to enter and genuinely excellent — an impressive collection of Impressionist art (there are real Monets and Renoirs here that regularly surprise first-time visitors), a strong natural history section with a life-size woolly mammoth skeleton, and enough interactive science exhibits to burn a few hours with kids in tow.
It sits in the handsome Cathays Park civic quarter, a short walk from Cardiff Castle, so it pairs well with a castle visit if the rain holds off for either half of the day. The café inside is a decent stop for lunch too, so you don’t need to brave the weather again once you’re in.
It’s particularly useful for our contractor and corporate guests on a rest day who don’t want to spend money on an activity, and for families needing a guaranteed dry, engaging few hours. Allow at least two hours, more if the kids get stuck into the dinosaur gallery. Free, easy, and reliably good — it’s one of the few “wet weather” options that doesn’t feel like a consolation prize.
