Snowdonia is close enough to our North Wales property to make a genuine day trip of it, and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is the centrepiece — the highest peak in Wales at 1,085 metres, and one of the most rewarding outdoor days you can have in the UK.
For hikers, the Llanberis Path is the longest but gentlest route to the summit, while the Pyg and Miners’ Tracks offer a more dramatic, rockier ascent for those with proper boots and a full day to spare. If you’d rather not walk up (or want the option coming down), the Snowdon Mountain Railway runs a genuinely charming Victorian rack-and-pinion train straight to the summit café, making the mountain accessible to families and less mobile guests too.
Weather on the summit changes fast, so check conditions before setting off and dress for conditions well below what you’ll find at the base. It’s a full-day undertaking either way, so start early, especially in peak summer when the railway and car parks fill up quickly. This is the one to build a whole day around rather than squeeze in — pack lunch, layers, and plenty of water regardless of which route you choose.
